U.S. Housing
|
Throughout the United States, millions of Americans suffer from the lack of available, safe, affordable and permanent housing. Although the majority of low- and extremely low-income households are working families with children, their incomes often do not cover the costs of housing without taking from funds for other necessities like food, health care, or childcare. Often poverty forces a family or individual to choose one necessity over another (choosing to pay rent over eating lunch, for example). Unaffordable housing costs contribute greatly to this cycle of poverty. MCC addresses a variety of housing concerns in Appalachia, New Orleans and Miami. Experiences of workers and partner organizations in these areas inform MCC Washington Office advocacy for policies which mandate sufficient funding for public housing assistance and which address the root causes of housing needs.
