Israel has long restricted the entry of goods into Gaza but tightened its blockade in June 2007 when Hamas took over power after winning elections in 2006. The siege has severely restricted the movement of people in and out of Gaza, as well as goods and supplies.
The stated reason for the siege is to weaken Hamas and to protect Israel from Hamas rocket attacks. Yet observers note that Hamas has grown stronger as a result of the closure, reaping large profits from goods that now enter Gaza through a network of tunnels. In the meantime, everyday life for people in Gaza continues to worsen. According to the United Nations, unemployment is about 45 percent. Four out of every five Gazans lives on less than $2 a day.
MCC’s work in Gaza has included humanitarian relief during Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip in December 2008 and January 2009, and MCC currently partners with local organizations to increase food security and to work with children affected by the violence and poverty that surrounds them. The Washington Office is involved in advocacy efforts with key decision makers to work for a fair and just peace and Gazans and Israelis alike.
As fellow Christians, we are called to offer comfort to those who are oppressed. But even more than comfort and aid, we must use our voices to call for justice.
