Mountaintop removal

MCC's work on mining justice is rooted in the biblical mandate to seek justice and right relationships. It is guided by our partnerships with affected communities and is inspired by our commitment to care for God’s creation.

Mountaintop removal strip mining destroys the natural environment and ecosystem, contaminates drinking water, threatens to destroy a longstanding Appalachian culture, and has contributed to higher unemployment in affected communities (as fewer miners are needed).

The MCC Washington Office works for legislation and regulations that hold mining companies accountable to clear environmental standards and place a high priority on the well-being of local communities and the natural environment. We also urge churchgoers to consider how our energy usage connects us to mountaintop removal and how such practices conflict with our faith, our commitment to peace, and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
