U.S.-Mexico border fence: Faith reflection

The issue of the border fence is important to us as Anabaptists because we are concerned about environmental stewardship, the preservation of local communities, and responding to immigrants in a Christian way.

These issues are not simple and clear-cut, but we choose to stand in unity with the people on both sides of the border who will suffer economically, socially, and environmentally from this wall.

Despite the national divisions that separate us as earthly citizens, we are called to reach out as brothers and sisters, finding creative ways to bridge these unnatural barriers through our common faith and hopes.

Border fence prayer

Creator God, it is through nature that I know you best,
T
he dry cactus-filled desert, the blue green energy of shifting ocean water,
Tiny rocks and sweeping mountains, cackling wind and penetrating sun,
This is your creation,
I see, taste and experience this natural world, and I am thankful.

Sustainer, I ask that you help me to protect this life-giving resource on a daily basis. Help me to see how my everyday actions impact the earth; to recognize the consequences of using gas to get around town; to ponder the condition of the landfill where my aged-out technology lays; and to measure the amount of water I use. May I learn how to take better care for the place where I live!

Creator, help our national leaders to care for the earth also, to respect laws that will allow the Sonoran pronghorn to prosper in its natural habitat of the US/Mexico borderlands and to allow the scant water in the San Pedro River to run freely between two countries.

Help our leaders to see that building a wall not only destroys a sacred arena for many migratory species but poco a poco destroys our human future too.

God, you have brought forth life on this globe and entrusted us to care for your creation. Help us to honor and respect this bounty through our speech and actions, encouraging the community on the journey.

Amen.
