Civil rights and religious freedom
Despite historical successes of various civil rights movements in the United States, our social systems continue to prefer certain individuals and groups over others. Preferences are continually determined by race, gender, ethnicity, religion, and socio-economic status, among others. As government entities are key supporters and creators of these systems, the MCC Washington Office addresses these preferences in public policy as an advocate and educator of equity and restored relationships, as modeled in the Biblical witness and in Mennonite and Anabaptist peace traditions. Primary areas of focus are racism, sexism, freedom of conscience and religious freedom. Photo credit: ehoyer/Flickr |
